Past Outreach Event: Families in need
Greetings Fellow Greater Washington Network Professionals,
As the holiday season quickly approaches, we want to take this opportunity to give back to those who are less fortunate than us. Many of us will enjoy being with family and friends, wrapping and opening Christmas presents, and having plenty to eat. However, this is not the same story for some local college students who attend Howard University, through the “Deb Moss Project” (EIN 46-2545735).
As hunger in the United States has worsened, food insecurity—defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a lack of "access to enough food for an active, healthy life"—has arrived on college campuses like never before. According to Feeding America, the country’s largest emergency food assistance network, roughly 10% of its 46.5 million adult clients attend school, including 2 million who are full-time students. Yet despite the prevalence of food insecurity among college students, few on-campus vendors accept food stamp benefits in lieu of other forms of payment (MSNBC.com).
This year, we are providing care packages to twenty (20) Howard University students who are unable to visit their families during the Christmas break and who have no money to purchase toiletries and food due to their family’s financial challenges. We would like to provide them with gift cards to local restaurants, movie theaters, and department stores. Additionally, we want to supply them with items that will meet their daily hygiene and food needs. Below is a sample list of items that you can place in the care packages:

Spring Ridge Middle School students who excel academically.
Outreach Event: Empowering Youth Through Partnership
On behalf of the Carolyn E. Parker Foundation, I was honored to join forces with The Jackie Hicks Foundation and partner with Jacob’s Ladder Youth Foundation, led by Mr. Jarriel Jordan, Sr., for a special Christmas fundraiser celebrating the achievements of Spring Ridge Middle School students.
One of the evening’s most memorable moments was the presentation of an official NFL football, a meaningful gift meant to inspire these young scholars to dream big, stay focused, and believe in their potential.
The night was filled with holiday cheer, genuine community spirit, and a shared passion for helping the next generation thrive. With the support of our donors and partners, we provided valuable resources to help these students continue excelling in school and beyond.
A heartfelt thank you to The Jackie Hicks Foundation, Spring Ridge’s academic leaders Dr. Brown-Taylor and Ms. Kay Jahn, and Jacob’s Ladder Youth Foundation for their partnership and commitment to making a difference.
Together, we are lifting up our youth, celebrating their achievements, and creating real opportunities for their future success.
With gratitude,
Adrienne M. Somerville

Past Outreach Event: Mentoring Month
Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Commanders football game for middle school student
Happy National Mentoring Month!
Mentoring can be a powerful tool to inspire and guide young individuals. A couple of months ago, Ms. Jackie Hicks and I had the pleasure of meeting an amazing middle school boy with a love for football and a desire to see his team, the Dallas Cowboys, play in person. As community leaders and mentors, Jackie and I were able to grant this wish by arranging for him and his beautiful family to attend an epic football game.
Attending yesterday’s Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Commanders football game not only created a memorable experience as he watched his team play (and WIN), but also fostered a sense of support and encouragement on his life’s journey.
On behalf of the Carolyn E. Foundation, I want to sincerely thank DMV’s very own Ms. Jackie Hicks. We appreciate your kindness and generosity; your thoughtful actions always make a meaningful impact.
Call to Action: Take delight in helping others and making an impact today. I believe the smiles of those in attendance say it all!
